[11/16/2011] The Holiday season brings warm thoughts of family, food, gifts and celebrations. However, it is also the time that we should remember that there are many in our communities who have the prospect of a bleak holiday because of job loss, illness, or economic stress. East Geauga has turned our focus to doing whatever we can to alleviate this situation. We have nearly completed the wooden toy truck project, and will provide over 100 trucks to Geauga County Jobs and Family Services for Christmas distribution. We are also making and donating 25 tie blankets to GCJ&FS for foster childrens' use. Additionally, as in many years' past, we will deliver 100 poinsettias to elderly, shut-ins, and those with illnesses. We are making future plans to participate in the "Claridon Cares" free dinner which will take place once a month. Finally, our first biennial Wreath Competition and Silent Auction is underway, and will culminate with a Social Hour and Silent Auction on Saturday, 12/3 at 6pm at Crossroads Country Cafe Party Room in Middlefield. Proceeds from the Silent Auction will be used to fund East Geauga Kiwanis service projects. [9/9/2011] With the Great Geauga County Fair behind us, we're assessing the effect the wet weather had on Fair sales and our profitability to fund service projects in the coming year. We had lots of foodstuffs left over, but thanks to the partnership we have with and the generosity of Middlefield Swiss Cheese, we were able to return excess trail bologna and Swiss cheese. Our club was also able to provide pulled Bar-B-Q pork and buns to several local organizations to use for upcoming meals. Weather is always a wild card at the Fair; no one can accurately predict how successful the five-day run will be (not even Dick Goddard). Looking forward, we are preparing for our two Fall fish frys, on Friday 9/30 and Friday 10/14 from 4:30pm-7:00pm at the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department. Hope to see all of our regular patrons, and many new ones at the County's best fish fry.
[ 4/22/2011] April began the Spring Fish Fry season, and we have had wonderful turnouts, including a record 371 patrons at the 4/15 event. We have two frys to go this spring, 5/6 and 5/20. Help us to continue the 50+ year tradition of East Geauga Kiwanis service to the community by attending one (or both) of our famous fish frys! Our club will conduct a Kiwanis "One Day" project on 4/30 at the Middlefield Historical Society by cleaning and pruning the landscape at the Society's headquarters in Middlefield. All are welcome to join us.
[ 2/28/2011] Our truck project was a resounding success! All of the trucks that were made in December were donated to Geauga County Job and Family Services for Christmas Giveaway and to Geauga County Help Me Grow. Plans are to keep 'em rolling! As part of the Taste of Middlefield in June, we plan to sell trucks with the proceeds going to DDC. Keep watching for details!
[12/10/2010] As the year winds to a close, we are busy finishing several holiday oriented projects. In November, EGK members constructed 60 wooden toy trucks to be donated to Geauga Jobs & Family Services and the Geauga Help Me Grow program. A set of non-toxic markers was furnished with each raw wood truck so each child could decorate his/her toy. During the 2nd week of December, we delivered 110 poinsettias to elderly, home-bound and ill residents in the Eastern Geauga area. We have also made donations to the Cardinal High School Key Club and to the Cardinal Middle School Builders Club. We are in the process of jointly sponsoring a college level Circle K Club at Kent State Geauga with the Newbury and Chardon Kiwanis Clubs.

[11/2 & 9/2010 ] East Geauga Kiwanis members have constructed 60 wooden trucks to be donated to Geauga County Family Services for their Christmas Basket project. In addition to the trucks, food and gloves will be donated and members plan to help pack and distribute the baskets.
[ 9/9/2010 ] East Geauga Kiwanis' 2010 sale of Middlefield Swiss Cheese, Trail Bologna and Pulled Pork Sandwiches at the Great Geauga County Fair is now in the history books. With a final sales total of about $11,500, we fell somewhat short of 2009 due to inclement weather for 2 days of the fair. Sunday and Monday were frightfully busy, but couldn't quite make up for the poor showing on Friday and Saturday. All in all, it was a good effort by all who contributed their time and talents, especially Claire Zurbuch, who orchestrated the whole event, and made it a reality through many hours of planning, organizing, and just brute force heaving and hauling many of the supplies we went through: 400 lbs. of pulled pork; 100 dozen sandwich buns; 600 lbs of swiss cheese and 75 cases of water and soda. Coming up in October will be 2 famous East Geauga Kiwanis fish frys at the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department, and several service projects relating to Christmas.
[ 4/12/2010 ] With three successful fish frys under our belt, we are looking forward to wrapping up the Spring fund-raising season with the fourth and final fry on Friday, 4/23. We continue to recieve rave reviews on the quality and selection we provide at these fish dinners, and we're pleased to be able to offer a competitive meal and generate needed service funds at the same time. On Kiwanis One Day last Saturday (4/10), six members from East Geauga Kiwanis worked to clean up the grounds of the Middlefield Historical Society's Century Inn. We're looking forward to becoming involved in some "Hands On" work projects now that the weather has turned for the better, so look for East Geauga Kiwanians in our area.
[ 3/9/2010 ] Spring is upon us, and with it comes the famous East Geauga Kiwanis Fish Frys at the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department. Four frys will be held again this year: 3/12; 3/26; 4/9; and 4/23. It's an all-you-can-eat fish fillet dinner with a side of shrimp, cole slaw, french fries or baked potato, and fresh baked Amish dinner roll. Come and join us for the best fish in Geauga County, fried and served by the members of the 52-years-old East Geauga Kiwanis. Also on tap in March is our Annual "Big Heart" Award dinner, where we honor several deserving citizens who perform service above and beyond the call of duty. These are your neighbors and friends, and you are invited to join us for a special meal and award ceremony on Tuesday, 3/16 at the Crossroads Country Cafe in Middlefield. On April 6th, in conjunction with the Middlefield Chamber of Commerce, we will host a program by the Cleveland Indians Organization, and it will be our Corporate Membership Night. We have invited all businesses in the Eastern Geauga County area to send a representative to be our guest for dinner and our program. If you're interested in Cleveland baseball (and who in Northeast Ohio isn't?), please join us for a night of great food and entertainment. Also in April (3/13) will be a program by Middlefield's own Rick Seyer (tonsorial savant and village councilman), who will present a program on Middlefield history. Rounding out our April programs wil be Sally Bell, from the Department on Aging, who will present an update on the burgeoning senior population on April 20th. Please join us for any or all of these entertaining and informative programs.
[ 1/20/2010 ] One hundred beautiful poinsettias found their way into the hearts and homes of deserving Eastern county residents during the Christmas holidays, courtesy of the East Geauga Kiwanis Club. The plants were distributed to people with health problems, nursing home residents, senior citizens and other friends of Kiwanis. We have delivered 25 hand crafted dolls and several tie blankets to Geauga Jobs and Family Services to be used in their foster care program. Additionally, club members collected supplies for and assembled nearly 100 health care kits for distribution to homeless citizens of downtown Cleveland by Andrea and Danny Pollock. Plans are being made for our Annual "Big Heart" award in March, which recognizes deserving volunteers who go above and beyond the call of service. [ 11/10/2009] Plans are being made for East Geauga Kiwanis' involvement in upcoming holiday giving. We will support the Cardinal Middle School Builders Club in shopping for a deserving family; we will again distribute poinsettias to shut-ins, seniors, and other deserving persons; and we will support Geauga Jobs & Family Services with sponsorship of a deserving family at Christmas. Our latest service project was a work day at Santa's Hideaway Hollow on Bundysburg Road in Middlefield township, and we will begin a decorate-it-yourself doll project for young patients in area hospitals. We have also completed the first round of reading for all three Geauga Headstart classes in Huntsburg, where a book is given to each child to take home to read. The Club will celebrate with its annual Christmas party in December.
[ 8/16/2009 ] Preparations are well underway for the Annual Great Geauga County Fair. Once again, East Geauga will sell Middlefield Swiss Cheese, Trail Bologna and pulled pork sandwiches. Pop and water round out our offerings at the Fair. This is an extensive effort requiring a lot of manpower, with 6 people each for two shifts a day for five days- 60 sturdy souls are necessary to keep the machine running. If you haven't signed up for a shift, feel free to call Judy Breedlove at the Crossroads Country Cafe (440) 632-0191 and volunteer your services, or those of a relative, neighbor or friend. All are welcome and needed! Next month, we will commence our reading project at the Geauga County Headstart school in Huntsburg. We have purchased books to present to each class of 30 students throughout the next school year. This is our newest Young Children Priority One (YCPO) project.
[ 6/16/2009 ] The annual scholarship awards dinner was held tonight at the Claridon Congregational Church UCC. Following an outstanding Swiss steak dinner prepared by the ladies of the church, awards were presented to the following Outstanding Freshmen: Erica Roy and Matthew Pelletier from Berkshire HS, and Jacklyn Hetrick and Tom Bandiera from Cardinal HS. Recieving $1,000 East Geauga Kiwanis scholarships were Jasmine Nelson from Berkshire HS, and Victoria Kronauer from Cardinal. Maria Schmuhl was the recipient of the Cardinal $1,000 Kiwanis Key Club scholarship, and Julie Hickox was presented with the $1,000 Richard A. Moss Service scholarship. Our congratulations and best wishes go with these outstanding students who will pursue a college education.
[ 3/16/2009 ] Spring has sprung (datewise, anyway), and the time has come for the famous East Geauga Kiwanis Fish Frys. We will serve four Northwest Pollock fish dinners on 4/3, 4/17, 4/24, and 5/15. Join us for the best fish dinner in all of Geauga County- Fish and shrimp, choice of French fries or baked potato, cole slaw, dinner roll and drink; and desserts by donation. Net proceeds from our fish frys (and the fair booth) comprise the majority of our roughly $10,000 annual service budget. So in addition to getting a great meal, you get a warm fuzzy knowing that some of your meal cost goes to help someone with a need. Thanks for your patronage!
[ 1/26/2009 ] The advent of a new year finds the club with new challenges and opportunities. We held a Kiwanis Information Night in December with 11 guests in attendance, and 2 new members joining. Also in December, we distributed 80 poinsettias to East Geauga area shut-ins, elderly and other deserving citizens. The club is organizing a "Reading Is Fundamental" program at the Huntsburg Head Start pre-school as a Young Children Priority One (YCPO) ongoing project. February 10th is the date for the 3rd Annual "Big Heart" award dinner, where several area community service volunteers will be honored. April will be here before you know it, and the first of four Spring Fish Frys will take place at the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department.
[ 11/12/2008 ] Fall is almost behind us, and the first flakes of snow have made their debut. We all love living in this area, but snow comes too soon, and stays too late! We're well into the new administrative year, and our activities are beginning to unfold. Coming up on December 8th at the Crossroads Restaurant in Middlefield will be our Kiwanis Information Night. All members are asked to invite one guest for this event, which will explain all there is to know about Kiwanis- Service, Fellowship, and supporting Children and Young adults. Poinsettias will also be distributed that night, to be delivered to shut-ins and elderly members of the community.
[ 10/6/2008 ] October 1st is the beginning of a new year for East Geauga Kiwanis (administratively, that is). On Tuesday, 10/14, the 2008-2009 officers will be installed: President- Fran Frank; President-elect- Cindy Robinson; 1st Vice-President- Manny Lopez; Treasurer- Shirley Siracki; Secretary- Terry Robinson. Fall fish frys will be held on consecutive Fridays at the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department- 10/17 and 10/24. Join us for a great meal of fish. shrimp, choice of french fries or bakes potato, cole slaw and drink- reputed to be the BEST fish fry in Geauga County!
[ 9/4/2008 ] The Great Geauga County Fair has come and gone, with East Geauga Kiwanis selling over $12,500 of Swiss cheese, Trail bologna, and pulled pork sandwiches. We usually net about $6,000 from this one event to support our slate of service projects. We thank all who volunteered their time and talents to plan, execute and clean up the East Geauga "Cheese Chalet", especially Claire Zurbuch and Don Hunter for orchestrating the smooth operation of the fund-raising event.
The summer also witnessed the building of a wheelchair ramp at a home on Pierce St. in Middlefield by Kiwanians Bruce Brigham and Duane Siracki.
[ 6/4/2008 ] We're celebrating East Geauga Kiwanis' 50th Anniversary this month. Over the past 50 years, the club has raised and put back into the local and worldwide community over $200,000 plus thousands of hours of volunteer service. On 6/25, we will host the Division 22 Council meeting at the Crossroads Country Restaurant Party Room, and present a program on our history, recognize distinguished members, and induct several new members. We are currently at 41 members, and our commitment is to have 50 members by the close of our 50th year. [ 4/30/2008 ] Spring events are unfolding, just like the flowers beginning to bloom. We just completed assisting with the administration of the State 8th grade exams for special needs students at the Cardinal Middle School over four days. Seven Kiwanians volunteered 24 hours of service for these exams. We will supply and place all the luminaria at the ACS Relay for Life at Cardinal High School on May 10-11. We are also planning for our first 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Mineral Lake Park in conjunction with Middlefield Community Days in July.
[ 4/1/2008 ] East Geauga's Spring Fish Frys are well underway. The next two frys are on April 4th and 18th at the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department. Our menu features Northwest pollock filets (flavored with our secret breading recipe), shrimp, choice of baked potato or french fries, cole slaw, roll and drink. All of this bounty prepared and served with the tender loving care of your local East Geauga Kiwanians for a paltry $8. Hope to see you there!
[ 1/29/2008 ] East Geauga Kiwanis is looking for individuals in our service area who have demonstrated a special talent for helping others. Last year East Geauga recognized 5 people in the area who provided services to a food pantry, Relay for Life, meals for the homeless and other worthwhile projects. In a joint venture with Crossroads Restaurant owner and Kiwanis Board member, Judy Breedlove, EGK is in a trial period to have a permanent home with community visibility.
